Guelph United Women qualify to 2026 OPL Cup Final
Guelph United Women have qualified to the OPL Cup Final, following a fantastic win last night at the Centennial Bowl, 5-1 against Woodbridge Strikers.
With Woodbridge defeating Guelph, 5-4, last time they were in town, this cup semifinal had all the makings of a close match. But it was not to be, as our team was in full control of the game from start to end. An incredible first half saw Guelph United score 5 times - Hannah Neville, Kate Knafelc, Olivia Rizakos, and a brace from Grace Hannaford, all contributed to a well-deserved 5-0 scoreline. The second half, with many substitutes coming in, was mostly uneventful, except for a consolation goal scored by our guests with the last kick of the game.
The win represents our women's team's biggest performance to date, as we qualify for the first time ever to the final of the league's cup competition.
Our OPL Cup Final opponent is OPL2 club Hamilton United, who caused a big upset in the other semifinal, defeating Vaughan Azzurri. The final will take place in late July, at a date to be determined, at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan.
Until then, our women's team will continue the quest for its highest ever finish in league play. Currently in 4th place of OPL1, we are only 2 points behind Woodbridge Strikers in a fight for a podium finish, with one game in hand, and 8 games to go in the season.
