GUFC Women defeats NDC Ontario once again
One win against the OPL1 league favorite NDC Ontario wasn’t enough: Guelph United’s women’s team did it again, last night at the Centennial Bowl, in an OPL Cup quarter-final contest.
Just 3 days after the 3-1 win on Sunday, GUFC Women came back from 0-1 down with a stunning injury time goal by Sydney VanderHoef, who scored with a beautiful shot from outside the box to push the knock-out match to a penalty shootout. It was a well deserved equalizer coming at the end of a close, tense match, in which Guelph United created more chances to score, but was unable to do so until the final minute.
Our team didn’t miss any of the 5 penalty shots, and, after Paige Rueffer hit the crossbar, Jasmine Burke scored the last penalty to clinch a semifinal spot.
In the OPL Cup semifinals, Guelph United will host Woodbridge Strikers, at a date to be confirmed. Meanwhile, the men’s team will also get their chance to qualify to the OPL Cup semifinals, on Tuesday, June 2nd at the Centennial Bowl, against Scarborough-based Master’s FA.
Our women’s team will next host Scrosoppi FC, on Saturday afternoon at the Bowl, in an OPL1 league matchup.
