League1 Ontario announces 2024 season structure

League1 Ontario has announced the competition structure for the 2024 season. As previously reported, from this year, the league is switching to a three-tier structure, with promotion and relegation between the divisions.

Guelph United will be part of the top-tier Premier Division, for both our men’s and women’s teams. Our reserve teams will be part of the third-tier League2 Ontario.

For complete details about the format, you can visit League1 Ontario’s site - click here for men, and here for women.

In addition, following the European model, L1O will also be hosting a Cup competition, that will run in parallel with the leagues. Details about this can be found here.

Some highlights of the new format:

  • Three divisions: Premier (top tier), Championship (second tier), League2 (third tier)

  • There will be no playoffs. The regular season winner is crowned champion.

  • Last place in Premier relegates to Championship; first place in Championship promotes to Premier

  • Second-last place in Premier plays a match against second place in Championship to determine who stays in which division

  • No direct relegation from Championship in 2024, because of the desire to get that division up to 12 teams as well.

  • League2 will have regional conferences and a 4-team playoff at the end, to determine the 2 direct promotion spots and the third place, which will play a match against the last place in Championship

  • Knockout cup competition that will run in parallel with the leagues, and will feature all teams, regardless of tier. The initial draw for the Cup will be made on February 22.
